Osteomyelitis ------------- (bone infection) Osteomyelitis is infection of a bone by pus-forming bacteria. It is usually caused by wounds, bites, open fractures or penetrating foreign objects. Signs of osteomyelitis are swelling, fever, pain and lameness. There may be a small opening with drainage at the site of the infection. Osteomyelitis may subside and recur. Important Points in Treatment 1. In some cases, radiographs (x-rays) and cultures are necessary to determine the extent and type of infection and the necessary treatment. 2. Some patients require surgical drainage of the infected site to eliminate infection. 3. Long-term treatment is occasionally necessary because relapses are common. 4. Exercise: Limit exercise to on-leash walking for ____ days/weeks. Gradually increase the amount of exercise after ____ weeks. 5. Bandage: Surgical dressings are sometimes necessary. Do not allow any bandage material to become wet. Change the dressing as follows: 6. Surgical patients: Check the incision daily. Report any unusual drainage to the doctor as soon as possible. 7. Diet: Follow the instructions checked. ____Feed the normal diet. ____A special diet is required. Feed: Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * The swelling persists or increases. * Your pet seems unusually uncomfortable. * The drainage increases or changes in consistency. * Your pet is reluctant to eat. * Your pet seems listless, vomits or develops diarrhea. * You cannot give the medication as directed.
