Endophthalmitis and Panophthalmitis ----------------------------------- General Information Endophthalmitis and panophthalmitis are similar, but panophthalmitis affects more of the eye. Endophthalmitis is severe inflammation of the iris, lens, retina and related structures. Panophthalmitis is severe inflammation of the entire eye, plus the immediate surrounding tissues. Both conditions are painful, and blindness often results. Your pet's condition has been diagnosed as: ____Endophthalmitis ____Panophthalmitis Causes include eye wounds and infection. Another danger is the possibility of spread of infection from the eye to the brain, which could cause even more serious problems, such as meningitis or encephalitis. Important Points in Treatment 1. In many cases, vision is lost early because of rapid destruction of vital inner eye structures. 2. If enough destruction has already occurred, scar tissue will replace the normal tissue, and the eyeball will often shrink and lose its natural color. Occasionally the eye will become enlarged due to excessive pressure. 3. Treatment will be directed according to your pet's needs. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * You cannot apply the prescribed medication. * Your pet continues to show signs of pain or discomfort. * The condition appears to worsen.
