Dermoids -------- General Information A dermoid is a tumor-like birth defect that may occur on the front portion of the eyeball. It resembles a misplaced section of skin. Dermoids contain structures found in normal skin, such as hair, fat, oil glands and regular skin layers. As the animal matures, hair arising from the dermoid may cause mild to severe eye irritation. Besides causing irritation, the dermoid can obstruct vision and is unattractive. Dermoids generally do not enlarge. If they do, it is only slightly. Important Points in Treatment 1. If the dermoid is to be surgically removed, your pet will first be evaluated to determine whether general anesthesia would be safe. Laboratory tests may be required. 2. The operation involves removing the dermoid from the underlying delicate eye tissue. If the dermoid extends onto the cornea, a scar usually results. The benefits of removing the dermoid outweigh the advantages of leaving it. Remarks:
