Urethritis ---------- General Information The urethra is the tubular passageway from the urinary bladder to the outside. Urethritis is an inflammation of this tube. Urethritis usually results from infections in other parts of the urinary system or from injury to the urethra. Bacteria are present in large numbers at the external urinary opening, and urethritis often results from bacteria invading the urethra. Adequate water intake and frequent urination are the best means to prevent urethritis. Important Points in Treatment 1. Laboratory tests and radiographs (x-rays) are often necessary to diagnose urethritis and monitor the effectiveness of treatment. 2. Give all medication as directed. Call the doctor if you cannot give the medication. 3. Diet: Follow the instructions checked. ____Feed the normal diet. ____Feed as follows: 4. Encourage your pet to drink water. Allow access to fresh water at all times. 5.
