Ear Drainage Surgery in Dogs ---------------------------- (Zepp procedure) General Information For an ear to remain normal and healthy, the outer opening of the ear must be large enough to allow accumulated wax and debris to pass from it. Long-standing (chronic) infections can cause the ear canal to become too narrow for passage of wax, dirt and bacteria. In certain cases, surgical reconstruction of the ear canal is the only way to re-establish proper drainage and help prevent recurrent infections. Important Points in Treatment 1. Because the surgery for ear drainage requires general anesthesia, a careful physical examination is necessary to determine your dog's current state of health. Laboratory tests may also be required to determine the type of infection present. 2. Management: Some dogs may scratch or damage the surgical site. If this occurs, call the doctor immediately. 3. During the healing period, the ears should be cleaned ____ times daily as follows: 4. Sutures: ____The sutures do not require removal. ____Present your dog for suture removal in ____ days. 5. Special instructions: Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * You cannot apply the prescribed medication. * Your dog paws or scratches its ear. * Your dog shows signs of serious illness, such as depression, persistent vomiting or inability to urinate.
