Schnauzer Comedo Syndrome ------------------------- (Schnauzer back) General Information Schnauzer comedo syndrome is characterized by development of comedones (blackheads) on the backs of Miniature Schnauzers. The blackheads are most numerous in the middle of the back, but extend from the neck to the pelvis. The comedones can be felt as hard, crusted projections on the skin surface. While the cause of the condition is unknown, it may represent hereditary abnormal development of the hair follicles. Important Points in Treatment 1. With severe comedo formation, the back is clipped and bathed with a medicated shampoo at least twice weekly. In some cases, the blackheads are treated with creams or ointment. 2. Daily alcohol rubs are beneficial. 3. Once the condition is under control, alcohol rubs twice weekly and periodic bathing with a medicated shampoo help prevent recurrence. 4. Some cases are associated with insufficient thyroid hormone. The doctor will advise you if thyroid testing is needed. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your dog's condition worsens or spreads despite treatment. * Your dog scratches itself excessively. * Your dog's general health worsens.
