Perianal Fistula ---------------- General Information A perianal fistula is an abnormal opening in the skin near the anus. These fistulas or tracts generally lead to the rectum or some infected area, such as an anal sac abscess. The condition is painful, causes constipation and straining, and may result in loss of control of urination and bowel movement. A foul-smelling discharge from these fistulas is common. Though medical treatment may provide temporary relief, surgical treatment is usually necessary. Important Points in Treatment 1. Diet: Follow the instructions checked. ____Feed the normal diet. ____A special diet is required. Feed as follows: 2. Exercise: Activity should be restricted during recovery. Keep your pet confined indoors and exercise on a leash to allow defecation and urination. 3. Surgical site: Check the incision area twice daily. Make sure it does not become contaminated with feces. Report any abnormalities to the doctor. 4. Restraint: Some dogs may damage the incision by repeated licking or chewing of the sutures. Call the doctor if you cannot prevent your dog from licking the incision. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Sutures are lost and the incision begins to open. * The surgery site appears infected. * Your pet becomes depressed or refuses to eat. * There is a discharge from the incision.
