Nasodigital Hyperkeratosis -------------------------- General Information Nasodigital hyperkeratosis is an excessive growth of the tissues covering the nose and foot pads. The cause is unknown. The nose and pads become hard and dry, and as the condition worsens, cracks may form. The footpads may become painful. Treatment is designed to control the excessive tissue growth. Important Points in Treatment 1. As the tissue increases in thickness, it can be trimmed back with sharp scissors. Only dead tissue should be trimmed. The doctor will demonstrate the proper technique. 2. Wet dressings or water soaks are useful in hydrating (wetting) the dry tissue. Petroleum jelly applied immediately after soaking helps retain moisture. 3. Special instructions: Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet's nose and/or pads develop cracks and become painful to the touch. * The nose or footpad tissues appear infected. * Sores develop in the hairy area adjacent to the nose or footpads. * Your pet seems uncomfortable.
