Interdigital Pyoderma --------------------- General Information Interdigital pyoderma is an infection of the feet, found most often between the toes. Small infected sores develop and later drain. The problem is often worsened by the dog's licking and biting the area and the difficulty in keeping the feet clean. Short-haired breeds, such as Dachshunds and English Bulldogs, are most often affected. In some cases, surgery is the necessary first step in treatment. Long-term medical treatment is needed in all cases. Important Points in Treatment 1. The medication must be given as directed, and all instructions for cleaning the skin must be followed exactly. Please call the doctor if you cannot treat your dog properly. 2. Activity: Because injury to infected feet worsens the problem, activity should be restricted. Restrict your pet's activity for ____ days/weeks. Keep your dog in the house, and dry its feet if they become damp. 3. Inspect your dog's feet daily. Treat any new sores when they first appear. 4. Special instructions: Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your dog's feet worsen and new sores develop. * There is drainage from the infected feet. * Your dog's infection recurs after surgery. * Your dog's general health changes.
