Ear Margin Dermatosis --------------------- General Information Ear margin dermatosis is an accumulation of small greasy plugs and scale-like material that sticks to the skin and hairs of the edge of the ear flap. This material is due to excessive secretion by certain skin glands. The condition is most common in Dachshunds and in this breed is frequently accompanied by hair loss from the ears. Other breeds of dogs are occasionally affected. Ear margin dermatosis may result from blood clots in the blood vessels supplying the ear, but often the cause is unknown. In severe cases, the ear margin may become infected, and skin ulcers may develop. Important Points in Treatment 1. Treatment consists of removing the accumulated material and treating the under-lying inflammation. 2. Treatment schedule: * Wash ear margins ______ times daily/weekly. * Apply ____________________________________ to the ear margin ______ times daily. 3. Most patients require periodic treatment to prevent recurrence. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your dog's condition does not improve. * Your dog develops new sores or the condition spreads. * Your dog's general health changes.
