Ear Flap Dermatitis ------------------- General Information Ear flaps are often irritated by biting flies that feed on the skin. Fly-bite dermatitis affects primarily the ear flaps, bridge of the nose, and eyes of outdoor dogs. Multiple fly bites cause redness and oozing of blood and serum from the skin. The fluids dry and collect on the skin as a dark crust. Eventually the sores become itchy, and the dog's scratching further damages the skin and may cause a bacterial infection. Important Points in Treatment 1. Crusts are removed with an antibacterial soap, and the underlying sores are treated with an antibacterial-cortisone ointment. 2. Fly repellents, fly or flea spray, or insect repellent mixed with petroleum jelly should be applied to the ears to prevent further sores. 3. Thoroughly check the pet's environment for fly sources. Straw, manure or grass piles should be treated with insecticidal sprays. Prompt removal of stool from the pet's environment aids in decreasing flies in the area. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet's rash spreads or worsens. * Your pet's general health deteriorates.
