Notoedric Mange in Cats ----------------------- General Information Notoedric mange is a skin disease caused by a parasitic mite. It is highly contagious and causes intense itching, thinning of the hair and development of tightly adhering, yellow-gray crusts and scales. As the disease progresses, the skin becomes thickened and folded. Bacterial infection may occur in the affected areas. Female mites burrow into the skin, where they deposit eggs that hatch in 3-10 days. The larvae return to the skin surface to feed and mature into nymphs and finally adults. The entire life cycle is complete within 3 weeks. Mites prefer to live in the skin covering the ears, head, face and neck. These mites can infest cats, dogs and rabbits and may cause temporary skin irritations in people. People in contact with your pet who develop skin problems should consult their physician. Important Points in Treatment 1. Other cats should not be allowed in contact with your cat or its bedding until recovery is complete. 2. Mites can infest dogs and people, so avoid handling the cat until it is cured. 3. Though the mites can survive only a few days off the cat, you should thoroughly clean the environment and use an insecticidal spray on cat carriers, bedding, collars and grooming tools. 4. Follow the treatment schedule exactly. Call the doctor if you cannot complete any treatment or feel your treatment may have been inadequate. 5. Treatment instructions: Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your cat's scratching increases. * Your cat's condition spreads. * Your cat's general health worsens.
