Stenotic Nares -------------- (narrowed nostrils) General Information Stenotic nares (narrowed nostrils) occur most commonly in dogs with pushed-in noses, such as Pekingese, Boston Terriers, Bulldogs or Pugs. In stenotic nares, the outer nasal opening is too small, and breathing through the nose is extremely difficult and noisy. Clear liquid often can be seen bubbling at the nostrils with each exhalation. Severely affected dogs breathe only through their open mouth. Important Points in Treatment 1. Surgical enlargement of the nostrils is the only effective treatment. Sutures may or may not be used, depending upon the surgical method. 2. Ordinarily no special diet is required. 3. Activity: Restrict activity to on-leash walking until healing is complete (about 1 week). Do not allow your pet to sniff in dirt or swim during that period. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * The surgery site oozes blood or fluid. * Your pet is lethargic. * Your pet has difficulty breathing. * Your pet refuses to eat.
