Sinusitis --------- General Information Sinuses are bony cavities in the skull that communicate with the nasal passages. The function of sinuses is unknown, but some theories are that they act as insulators, add resonance to the voice, moisten inspired air, or act as shock absorbers. The roots of some of the upper teeth extend into the sinuses, and serious gum disease and/or tooth abscesses may cause sinus infections. Sinus infections may cause other problems, such as eye or nose discharge, coughing, periodic harsh breathing spasms (reverse sneeze) and/or other respiratory infections. Important Points in Treatment 1. Radiographs (x-rays) may be necessary to diagnose sinusitis and monitor the response to treatment. Blood tests and bacterial cultures may also be required for effective treatment. 2. The doctor may recommend teeth cleaning and/or extraction of some teeth. 3. Medication must be given as directed. Call the doctor if you cannot give the medication. 4. During the treatment period, protect your pet from exposure to noxious fumes, dusty conditions, severe cold, etc. 5.
