Respiratory Tract Obstructions ------------------------------ General Information An open passage from the nose and/or mouth to the lungs is necessary for normal breathing. Anything that mechanically interferes with air flow impairs normal respiratory function. Breathing may be obstructed by such things as tumors, inhaled objects, birth defects and infections. Impaired breathing is common in short-nosed breeds, such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Pekingese and Boxers. These breeds have abnormally small and narrow nostrils and/or an abnormally long, soft palate. These defects often can be corrected by surgery. Important Points in Treatment 1. Treatment of respiratory obstruction depends on the type of obstruction. Hospitalization, laboratory tests, radiographs (x-rays) and surgery may be necessary. 2. Give all medication. Call the doctor if you cannot give the medication. 3. Activity: Follow the instructions checked. ____Allow normal activity. ____Restrict activity as follows: 4.
