Pyothorax --------- General Information Pyothorax is an accumulation of pus in the chest cavity. Causes include penetrating chest wounds and spread of infection from another part of the body. When bacteria or foreign materials enter the chest, the body's defense system responds by sending white blood cells to fight the invaders. As a result, pus (dead blood cells and dead bacteria) accumulates in the chest cavity and crowds the lungs. Toxic materials produced by the bacteria also cause considerable stress on the body. Pyothorax can be life-threatening. Important Points in Treatment 1. Extended hospitalization is necessary in some cases of pyothorax. Treatment includes drainage of the chest cavity, antibiotics and various supportive measures, depending on the severity of the illness. Chest radiographs (x-rays) and various laboratory tests are important to determine the effectiveness of therapy. 2. Give all medication as directed.
