Pulmonary Emphysema ------------------- General Information Pulmonary emphysema is a condition in which the small air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) break down to form fewer, larger sacs. This decreases the functional surface area of the lungs, causing labored breathing, shortness of breath on exertion, coughing and wheezing. Emphysema may result from prolonged or repeated irritation from pollutants, such as tobacco smoke, vapors or dust. Other causes include inflammation, infection and tumors of the respiratory tract. Important Points in Treatment 1. Chest radiographs (x-rays) are necessary to diagnose the condition and monitor its progress. 2. Give all medication as directed. Call the doctor if you cannot give the medication. 3. Keep your pet out of dusty or damp surroundings and avoid exposure to smoke and noxious fumes. 4. Have your pet's teeth and gums checked regularly, as infections in the mouth easily spread to the respiratory tract. 5.
