Pulmonary Edema --------------- General Information Pulmonary edema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid within the lungs, including the air passages, supporting lung tissue and air sacs. This accumulation of fluid prevents adequate oxygenation of the blood. Pulmonary edema is a very serious condition and can be fatal. Causes are classified as heart- and non-heart-related. Heart-related causes include several diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Non-heart-related causes include trauma, shock, inhalation of irritating or poisonous substances, airway obstructions and cancer. Important Points in Treatment 1. Because pulmonary edema is life-threatening, treatment is often intensive and complex. Treatment is aimed at increasing oxygen uptake, reducing fluid in the lungs, removing the underlying cause, and stabilizing the heart and other organs. Hospitalization is usually required. 2.
