Prostatitis ----------- General Information The prostate is a gland surrounding the tubular opening of the urinary bladder of male dogs and cats. Its purpose is production of most of the fluid portion of semen. Prostatitis is a bacterial infection of the prostate. Disease-causing bacteria gain access to the penis and spread to the prostate. Male dogs of all ages are susceptible. Infection of the prostate can be very painful, and affected dogs generally appear hunched up. A discharge from the penis is usually present. Prompt and intensive treatment is necessary. Important Points in Treatment 1. Treatment of prostatitis includes antibiotics, hormones and sometimes surgery. Frequently, cultures are necessary to identify the bacteria involved and select an effective antibiotic. 2. Give all medication as directed. Call the doctor if you cannot give any medication. 3. Observe urination and bowel movements at least once daily. Discuss any abnormalities with the doctor. 4.
