Prostatic Hyperplasia in Dogs ----------------------------- General Information The prostate gland surrounds the tubular opening (urethra) of the urinary bladder of male dogs. Its purpose is to produce most of the fluid portion of semen. Prostatic hyperplasia is an abnormal increase in the size of the prostate gland associated with a hormone imbalance. It is common in dogs over 5 years of age. As the prostate enlarges, it compresses the colon, which is located directly above it. This can cause difficult, painful bowel movements and eventually constipation. Important Points in Treatment 1. Prostatic hyperplasia is treated both surgically and medically, depending on the severity of the case. Castration (removal of both testicles) causes shrinkage of the prostate and is usually the best treatment. 2. All current therapies for prostatic hyperplasia reduce or eliminate the dog's ability to breed. 3. Give all medication as directed. Call the doctor if you cannot give the medication. 4. Diet: Follow the instructions checked. ____Feed the normal diet. ____A special diet is required. Feed as follows: 5. Activity: Follow the instructions checked. ____Allow normal activity. ____Restrict activity as follows: 6.
