Phimosis/Paraphimosis --------------------- General Information Phimosis is the inability to extend the penis through the opening of the sheath. This may be due to an abnormally small opening in the sheath at birth, or scarring of the opening as a result of injury or disease. Phimosis often results in abnormal urination and distention of the sheath. Paraphimosis is a condition in which the penis cannot be withdrawn back into the sheath. This condition most often occurs in young dogs after mating, injury or masturbation. It may also be caused by an abnormally small sheath opening or by hair on the sheath that folds inward and traps the penis outside. Your pet has: ____ phimosis ____ paraphimosis Important Points in Treatment 1. If your pet has an injury of the sheath and penis, radiographs (x-rays) are often necessary because the bone within the penis may be fractured. 2. Phimosis and occasionally paraphimosis are sometimes treated by surgically enlarging the opening of the sheath. 3. Surgical patients: Check the incision at least once daily and report any abnormalities to the doctor. Prevent your pet from licking or chewing the sutures. Call the doctor if this is a problem. 4. Activity: During recovery, limit your pet's activity to on-leash walking. Avoid situations that cause excitement. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet has difficulty urinating or bleeds from the penis or sheath. * Your pet seems uncomfortable and signs return. * Your pet removes the sutures or irritates the incision. * You cannot give the medication as directed.
