Balanoposthitis --------------- General Information Balanoposthitis is an inflammation on the outer surface of the penis and the inner surface of the sheath. The cause is related to urine that collects in this area. Bacteria find this an excellent place to multiply. The result is tissue irritation at this delicate location. Irritating, blister-like lesions are often present and hidden by the sheath. The inflammation is characterized by a persistent discharge of pus from the opening of the sheath and is usually the result of bacterial infection. Important Points in Treatment 1. Your pet may require hospitalization for treatment. The severity of balanoposthitis determines the method of treatment used. Some cases require a general anesthetic. A blood-tinged discharge may be evident for several days following this type of treatment. 2. Keep your pet away from all situations that may result in sexual excitement, such as contact with female dogs in heat. 3. If medication is prescribed to be applied into the sheath, deposit the medication between the penis and sheath, through the opening into the sheath. Immediately afterwards, hold the end of the sheath closed with one hand and use the other hand to milk the medication back into the sheath. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet exhibits signs of persistent discomfort from sexual excitement. * You cannot apply the medication as directed.
