Mastitis -------- General Information Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary glands, with or without infection. It is related to heavy milk production and incomplete emptying of the glands. The mammary glands become swollen, tender and hot and may develop dark-red or purple soft spots. Milk may be blood-tinged or off-color. Other signs include fever, restlessness, reduced appetite and discomfort of the mammary glands. The mother will often neglect the young, and they in turn will cry excessively, weaken and die if not cared for. Important Points in Treatment 1. In severe infections, surgical drainage of the affected glands may be necessary. Hospitalization may be required. 2. Give all medication as directed. Call the doctor if you cannot give the medication. 3. Care of the mammary glands: 4. In many cases, puppies (kittens) must not be allowed to nurse. The doctor will advise you if this is necessary and instruct you on proper care of the young. 5. Exercise: Follow the instructions checked. ____No exercise restriction is necessary. ____Restrict activity as follows: Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Mammary gland swelling persists or increases. * Your pet vomits or refuses to eat or drink. * The health of your pet or the young appears to worsen.
