Galactostasis ------------- (caked mammary glands) General Information Galactostasis is a condition that occurs when a mother's milk is so abundant that the babies cannot suckle enough to empty the mammary glands. As a result, the milk tends to cake or harden, especially in any mammary glands not suckled by the babies. The mammary glands may become reddened and painful, and occasionally mastitis (inflammation of the mammary glands) results. Important Points in Treatment 1. Apply hot packs (not so hot that it burns or causes discomfort) to the mammary glands for 5-10 minutes. Then gently massage the area. This can be done 2-4 times daily. 2. The mother can be milked if excessive milk accumulates. The doctor can instruct you in the proper method. 3. Diet: Follow the instructions checked. ____Feed the normal diet. ____Feed a special diet: 4. Water: Provide clean, fresh water at all times. If your pet does not drink much water, salt the food lightly to encourage water consumption. 5. Exercise: Normal exercise is beneficial. 6. Encourage the puppies to nurse any neglected mammary glands. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * You cannot prevent further caking of the mammary glands. * Your pet shows restlessness, panting or crying.
