Endometritis ------------ General Information Endometritis is an infection of the lining of the uterus that usually causes no signs of illness other than infertility. These dogs usually cycle and mate normally. Conception rates, however, are very low. Some dogs with endometritis develop a more serious infection called pyometra. These dogs become very ill and may vomit, drink large amounts of liquids, urinate frequently and have a vaginal discharge. Untreated pyometra may cause death. Samples may be taken from the cervix to confirm the diagnosis of endometritis. Important Points in Treatment 1. Long-term (4-6 weeks) antibiotic treatment is usually necessary. 2. Give all the medication as directed. Call the doctor if you cannot administer the medication as directed. 3. Activity: Ordinarily no restriction of activity is necessary. 4. Diet: In most cases, no special diet is required. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your dog vomits. * Your dog acts depressed or refuses to eat. * Your dog develops a vaginal discharge. * Your dog's general health changes. * Your dog drinks more water than usual or urinates more often.
