Birth Control in Dogs: Ovaban ----------------------------- General Information Ovaban is a highly effective drug used for birth control in female dogs. It must, however, be used as directed. The following precautions must be heeded: * Ovaban should not be used in dogs that have not had their first heat cycle. * Ovaban should not be used in dogs with mammary tumors or reproductive tract disease. * Ovaban should not be given to pregnant dogs. * Ovaban should not be given for more than 2 consecutive heat cycles. Treatment can be resumed after one cycle without treatment. A physical examination and vaginal smear should be done before treatment to determine the dog's health status and stage of the reproductive cycle. Treatment Follow the instructions checked. ____Ovaban will end a heat period if treatment is started within the first 3 days. The drug is given for 8 consecutive days, and signs of heat should disappear within 3-8 days. To prevent accidental mating, the dog should be confined until the bleeding stops. The next heat period will occur within 2-9 months, with most occurring 4-6 months after treatment. Give ____ Ovaban tablet(s) daily for 8 days. ____Ovaban may be given daily for 32 days to postpone an anticipated heat period. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet's mammary glands enlarge or produce milk. * Your pet seems listless, or drinks or urinates excessively. * Your pet's temperament or appetite changes. * Your pet develops a vaginal discharge.
