Agalactia --------- (lack of milk) General Information Agalactia is lack of milk production in a nursing mother. This may occur when there is insufficient mammary gland development at the time of delivery. It also occurs occasionally when the mother has undergone a cesarean section. Normally, if no milk is present at the time of birth, sufficient amounts will be present within 24 hours. While there is no medication to increase milk production, a hormone can be given to stimulate release of milk from mammary glands. Important Points in Treatment 1. If milk is not present shortly after birth, the newborn animals must be fed by hand. 2. The mother's diet should be of adequate quantity and high quality. To enhance milk production, the mother should consume approximately 2-2 1/2 times her normal food intake. After the second week of lactation (milk production), the mother requires approximately 3 times her normal food intake. 3. Diet: Follow the instructions checked. ____Feed the normal diet. ____A special diet is required. Feed: 4. Water: Provide fresh drinking water at all times. If your pet does not drink much water, lightly salt the food until water consumption increases. 5. Exercise: Normal exercise is allowed and may be beneficial. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Milk is not produced, or production decreases. * You have difficulty feeding the supplement to the newborn. * The babies continually cry and seem uncomfortable.
