Arsenic Poisoning ----------------- General Information Arsenic is a highly poisonous substance commonly found in ant and snail poisons. The compound is also used for killing rodents, insects and various plants. It may also be found in some paints. All animals are susceptible to arsenic poisoning, but the effects depend on the type of arsenic, amount consumed, general health of the animal, and rapidity of treatment. Signs of arsenic poisoning may begin from one to several hours after ingestion and may be fatal. Important Points in Treatment 1. If the doctor sees your pet shortly after it has eaten the poison, stomach pumping may be beneficial, especially if no signs of poisoning have yet occurred. Supportive therapy is generally required, depending upon your pet's individual needs. 2. High-protein foods, such as meat, fish, eggs or cottage cheese, should be added to your pet's regular diet. 3. Your pet's activity should be severely restricted for the first 2 weeks of recovery. After that, exercise should be increased gradually. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet vomits or has diarrhea. * Your pet appears restless or has abdominal pain. * Your pet's condition worsens.
