Nutrition and Liver Disease --------------------------- General Information One of the liver's many functions is to enable the body to use digested fats and proteins. Excessive amounts of these nutrients in the diet may exceed the capacity of a diseased liver and cause serious complications. Diets containing proper amounts of fat and protein decrease the workload of a diseased liver, and control of the disease is much easier. Dietary management can be accomplished with a special prescription diet or a carefully prepared homemade diet. A homemade diet, however, is very difficult to prepare and not highly recommended. Feeding Instructions 1. Prescription Diet: This is a complete diet. Do not give other foods. Feed___________ ______________________________________________ can(s)/cup(s) ____ times daily. 2. Homemade diet: * Feed small amounts of high-quality protein, such as milk, egg or liver. Feed 1/2 - 2/3 oz per 10 lb of body weight daily. * Fats should not exceed more than 4% of the diet. * Carbohydrates (starches) are used to meet the caloric needs of your pet. Rice and other cereals are the best carbohydrates to use. * Give a vitamin-mineral supplement as directed by your doctor.
