Prostatic Tumors ---------------- General Information The prostate gland surrounds the tubular opening of the urinary bladder. It produces most of the fluid portion of semen. Tumors of the prostate are not common. They can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). As with all other tumors, early detection is important for successful treatment. Malignant tumors often spread to nearby lymph nodes, the kidneys and the lungs. The bladder is also frequently involved. The causes of prostatic tumors are unknown. Important Points in Treatment 1. Treatment for a prostatic tumor can be medical, surgical or both. If the tumor has already spread to other areas, surgical treatment is of little use. 2. Various laboratory tests, radiographs (x-rays) and biopsy of involved tissue are usually required for proper treatment. Recommendations:
