Eyelid Tumors ------------- General Information Eyelid tumors are growths on the eyelids. The cause is not well understood. False tumors (pseudotumors) caused by inflammation may also occur. Tumors are divided into 2 groups: benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous). Most eyelid tumors are benign; however, it may be difficult to distinguish between the 2 types unless the tissue is examined microscopically. Eyelid tumors that grow on the inner aspect of the eyelid may rub against the eyeball and cause pain and damage to the eye. Some tumors become raw and infected. Eyelid tumors may grow near or in the tear ducts and block tear flow. Any eyelid tumor should be removed. Eyelid tumors may grow so much that a large section of eyelid tissue must be removed to help ensure that the entire tumor is eliminated. In those cases, eyelid reconstruction (plastic surgery) must be done to retain proper eyelid function. Removal of the tumor in the early stages of growth often avoids the need for such extensive surgery and decreases the overall risks to your pet. Important Points in Treatment 1. Methods used for eyelid tumor removal include excision (surgical removal), cryotherapy (freezing) and electrosurgery (use of electric current). 2. Most cases require a general anesthetic and brief hospitalization. 3. Laboratory tests may be needed before surgery. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * The tumor re-appears. * Your pet repeatedly rubs its eye. * The eye is red or watery.
