Hypertrophic Osteoarthropathy ----------------------------- General Information Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy is a disease that involves an increase in the thickness of the tissue immediately surrounding bone. This tissue is called the periosteum. Radiographs (x-rays) of the diseased bones show noticeable thickening, with a rough, irregular surface. Leg bones are usually involved. Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy does not develop alone. It is caused by another disease at a different location in the body. The most common cause is a tumor or other disease of the lungs. For this reason, hypertrophic osteoarthropathy is thought of as a sign of a more serious disease. Important Points in Treatment 1. Treatment of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy depends entirely on the success of treatment of the underlying disease; however, medication for pain may help make your pet more comfortable. 2.
