Discospondylitis ---------------- General Information Discospondylitis is an infection of one or more bones in the spinal column (vertebrae) and of the intervertebral discs that join them. Such infections result from penetrating wounds, infections around the vertebrae, bacteria in the bloodstream, or plant awns (foxtails) or other foreign materials that migrate through the body. Infections in the bony vertebrae and discs are painful and cause inflammation of the spinal cord. Signs vary with the severity and location of the infection. Important Points in Treatment 1. Treatment of discospondylitis is often difficult and lengthy. Slow recoveries and relapses are common. 2. Bacterial cultures are often necessary. 3. Repeated radiographs (x-rays) of the affected vertebrae are necessary throughout treatment and recovery. 4. Hospitalization and intravenous medication are often necessary. Your pet will be sent home as soon as possible. 5. Surgery on affected vertebrae is often needed. 6. Home care: Provide a warm, comfortable environment, restricted activity, good nutrition and proper medication. Please call the doctor if you cannot carry out any prescribed treatments. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet's signs worsen. * Your pet vomits or has difficulty breathing. * Your pet has a seizure. * Your pet develops a draining sore. * Your pet's general health declines.
