Retrobulbar Abscess ------------------- General Information A retrobulbar abscess is a collection of pus behind the eyeball. It is generally caused by bacteria that have entered through a wound or have been carried by the blood from elsewhere in the body. Signs include protrusion of the eyeball and pain when the mouth is opened. The condition worsens with time, and some pets stop eating because of the intense pain of chewing. Retrobulbar abscesses may cause the same signs as tumors or salivary cysts. Therefore, diagnosis may be difficult. Laboratory tests, radiographs (x-rays) and analysis of fluid samples may be used for diagnosis. Important Points in Treatment Hospitalization, surgical drainage under a general anesthetic, and antibiotic therapy may be required, especially if the abscess is advanced. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * The condition remains the same or worsens. * You cannot administer the prescribed medicine. * Your pet refuses to eat or drink.
