Posterior Segment Disorders: Congenital --------------------------------------- General Information A congenital posterior segment eye disorder is an abnormal condition of the back of the eyeball that is present at birth. It may be inherited or may be caused by non-inherited diseases, poisons, poor nutrition, radiation, drugs or infection. Examples of congenital posterior segment eye disorders include Collie eye syndrome, Sheltie eye anomaly, multiple ocular anomalies, vitreoretinal dysplasia, retinal dysplasia, optic disc colobomas, optic nerve hypoplasia, and others. Important Points in Treatment 1. In general, there is no treatment for congenital posterior segment eye disorders. Some pets become blind, while others retain enough vision to function as normal pets. 2. Animals with congenital eye disorders should not be used for breeding. Comments:
