Ophthalmia Neonatorum --------------------- General Information The eyelids of newborn puppies and kittens open between 7 and 14 days of age. Ophthalmia neonatorum is a serious infection directly behind the closed eyelids. It is caused by bacteria that have entered the eyes before, during or after birth. The eyelids become reddened, swollen and painful. Since the infection is trapped directly against the eyeball, the eye itself may be destroyed, with permanent loss of vision. Important Points in Treatment 1. Treatment is directed at opening the eyelids as soon as possible to allow the infection to escape. 2. Before applying the prescribed medicine, wipe the eye and surrounding area gently with sterile cotton or a tissue moistened with clean water. 3. Be cautious when cleaning the eye so that you avoid direct contact with the pus. Do not allow young children to become contaminated by handling the pet. Wash your hands after treating the patient. 4. You may keep the baby with its mother unless directed otherwise. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * You cannot apply the medicine as directed. * The eyelids re-seal and swelling recurs. * The baby becomes listless and refuses to nurse.
