Microphthalmos -------------- General Information Microphthalmos is a condition in which the eye is smaller than normal. It generally results from abnormal development of the fetal eye. In most cases, the cause is unknown. Microphthalmos is present more often in certain families of small breeds, such as Toy and Miniature Poodles, Miniature Schnauzers, Pomeranians and others. This suggests some genetic influence. Microphthalmos also occurs in cats. It also may occur with other inherited retinal defects, such as Collie eye syndrome. In cases where the structures of the eye are normal, the animal may be able to see. If internal eye structures are abnormal, vision may be absent. No pain seems to be associated with this condition. Important Points in Treatment Microphthalmos cannot be cured. Treatment, if any, is to provide comfort in animals with complications (which is uncommon). If no complications are present, the eye needs to be re-evaluated only when your pet is presented for routine visits. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * You note a sudden change in the eyes. * Your pet shows persistent signs of discomfort.
