Hyphema ------- General Information Hyphema is a collection of blood within the front compartment (anterior chamber) of the inner eye, and is a sign of a serious problem. There are many reasons bleeding may occur in the eye. The exact cause may be difficult to determine, since the blood can mask the location of the injury or disease. Extensive bleeding within the eye can lead to serious consequences, including blindness. Important Points in Treatment 1. Initial treatment is to control the bleeding, since it may destroy vision. At the same time, efforts will be made to discover the cause so that it may be corrected. 2. Besides a thorough eye examination, laboratory tests and radiographs (x-rays) may be required. Occasionally surgery, requiring general anesthesia, is necessary. 3. You should limit your pet's activity as much as possible to prevent increased blood pressure. This will reduce the chances of further bleeding during healing. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet shows signs of pain, such as rubbing or pawing its eye. * You cannot apply the prescribed medication. * Bleeding within the eye recurs.
