Blepharitis ----------- General Information Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids, with or without infection. The eyelids contain many specialized structures that contribute to the overall health of the eyes. Besides hair follicles that give rise to protective eyelashes, special glands that secrete oil and mucus help lubricate the eyes. All of these structures can develop diseases that cause discomfort and prevent proper lid function. Causes of blepharitis include injuries, infection, parasites, birth defects, allergic reactions, autoimmune diseases and nutritional deficiencies. Important Points in Treatment Laboratory tests may be necessary to identify the causative agent. Additional irritation to your pet's eyes, such as from dirty water, wind, dust, pollen, hair spray, smoke or self-trauma, should be avoided. Clean and disinfect grooming articles at frequent intervals. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet shows signs of continued pain or discomfort. * You cannot apply medication as directed. * The condition appears to worsen.
