Stomatitis ---------- General Information Stomatitis is an inflammation of the tissues lining the mouth. Among the many causes are injuries, infections, allergy, immunologic disease, eating irritating substances, and kidney disease. Due to the many causes, various laboratory tests and/or radiographs (x-rays) may be needed to find the underlying abnormality. Dental disease often accompanies stomatitis, and dental treatment may be a recommended part of stomatitis therapy. Important Points in Treatment 1. Medication must be given as directed. Call the doctor if you are unable to give any prescribed medication. 2. Diet: Follow the instructions checked. ____Feed the normal diet. ____A special diet is necessary. Feed as follows: 3. Activity: Remove all chew toys and bones during the recovery period. 4. Oral rinsing is important in treating some types of stomatitis. The doctor will discuss and instruct you in the procedure if it will be helpful in treating your pet. Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet's problem recurs after apparent recovery. * Your pet is reluctant to eat, or eats with difficulty. * Your pet's gums bleed.
