Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis --------------------------- General Information Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and small intestine, characterized by sudden vomiting and bloody diarrhea. The cause is not completely understood, but bacterial toxins, viruses and allergy have been suggested as causes. While the disease can occur in any breed at any age, it is most common in young toy or miniature breeds of dogs. This disease is considered an emergency, as it can progress to profound shock and death in a matter of hours. Important Points in Treatment 1. In most cases, hospitalization is required because affected dogs cannot keep down medication or food given by mouth. Various blood tests are necessary to evaluate the patient's condition and monitor progress. Occasionally, radiographic (x-ray) examination of the abdomen is required. 2.
