Ulcerative Colitis of Boxers ---------------------------- General Information Ulcerative colitis of Boxers is a chronic (long-standing) disease of the large intestine, most commonly found in Boxers under 2 years of age. Its cause is unknown. Boxers with this disease have repeated and long episodes of bloody diarrhea, and strain to pass small amounts of semi-formed stools that contain blood and mucus. Though affected dogs remain in fairly good condition, they usually lose weight. Vomiting occurs in some dogs. Important Points in Treatment 1. Various laboratory tests and x-ray studies are often necessary to diagnose ulcerative colitis of Boxers. Most of the tests are done to rule out other conditions with similar signs. 2. Relapses are common during treatment. 3. Give all medication as directed. Call the doctor if you cannot give the medication. 4. Diet: Dietary therapy is extremely important in treatment of ulcerative colitis. Feed your pet as follows: 5. Activity: A quiet, restful environment is important in treatment. Sedatives may be necessary if your pet is easily excited. Call the doctor if you are having difficulty keeping your pet quiet. Do not allow strenuous exercise until the doctor advises it. 6. Special instructions: Notify the Doctor if Any of the Following Occur: * Your pet does not respond to treatment. * Your pet's signs recur after apparent recovery. * Your pet develops new signs.
