Idiopathic Colitis ------------------ General Information Idiopathic colitis is an inflammation of the lower bowel (colon). The lining of the bowel becomes inflamed and ulcerated, causing straining and diarrhea. The feces often contain blood and mucus and have a very foul odor. While the disease may affect dogs of any breed, Boxer dogs are most frequently affected. Most affected dogs are less than 2 years of age and otherwise appear to be in good health. The cause is unknown. Important Points in Treatment 1. Laboratory tests and radiographs (x-rays) are usually required. In addition, direct visualization of the bowel with a proctoscope and/or biopsy of the colon may be necessary. 2. In many cases, control of signs is the goal of treatment, as a permanent cure may not be possible. 3. Give all medication as directed. Call the doctor if you cannot give the medication. 4.
